Recent Fishing Adventure in New Zealand
Very recently while on holiday in New Zealand, I had the chance to stay on Mayor Island off the east coast of the North Island. This offshore island is located in deep water and is popular for big game fishing. many large Striped Marlin, Sharks and Tuna are caught in the deep water around the island. My son and I took fishing kayaks out with us on board a large Catamaran. The plan was to do some fishing and diving around the coastline targeting the reef fish and the delicious Snapper. On the first day we did well, my son spearing a nice snapper and a big Blue Moki while I fished with my soft-bait rig and got a good haul of Snapper. We had heard about larger fish that were in the water surrounding an off shore reef about three quarters of a mile offshore from the island and decided to visit it the next day. The Shimano Slade soft bait tackle we were using was suitable for 6 – 8 kg fish. I also had a 10 kg Shimano rod with a Shimano TR200-G barrel type reel used for bottom fishing with a ledger rig.
It didn’t take long to discover this gear was not up to the job. On my second cast with the softbait rod I hooked up to a large Kingfish. These are powerful fish that can attain a size of up to two metres in length and weigh over 60 kg. They are almost the same as Californian kingfish. My rod was bent in an impressive half circle and as I tried to crank the reel handle the reel was twisting and distorting on the rod. The braid was under so much tension it was making a sort of pinging noise and trying to lift the fish with the rod just made it bend more. After doing my best for 5- 10 minutes the carbon fibre rod snapped and then the line broke! Very disappointed I switched to my second rod and rigged it with a softbait. Within 15 minutes I hooked up again and another power house fish pushed my gear to the limit. This time the braid broke and i lost a second lot of terminal tackle. At that point I regretted not having more more suitable equipment available as the fishing was amazing. I may never get that same opportunity again and unfortunately it will remain as a fish story of the one that got away rather than the much more satisfying story of boating one of those spectacular fish.
